📍 Sacramento, CA — April 17, 2025
The Sacramento Kings are finalizing an agreement to hire longtime NBA executive Scott Perry as their new general manager, sources told ESPN on Thursday.
Perry, who launched his executive career with the Detroit Pistons in 2000, briefly worked with the Kings in 2017 before joining the New York Knicks. Now, he returns to Sacramento to succeed Monte McNair, who departed by mutual agreement following the Kings’ season-ending loss to the Dallas Mavericks in the Western Conference play-in tournament.
Scott Perry’s Extensive NBA Experience
Perry brings over two decades of front office experience to Sacramento. In addition to his stints with Detroit and New York, he held key roles with the Orlando Magic and the then-Seattle SuperSonics. Known for his player development acumen and strong relationships around the league, Perry is expected to build upon the Kings’ recent progress.
Monte McNair’s Impactful Tenure
McNair’s five-year run as general manager marked a critical turning point for the Kings:
-
Named NBA Executive of the Year in 2023
-
Led the Kings to a 48-34 record in 2023, ending a 16-year playoff drought
-
Achieved three consecutive 40-win seasons
-
Oversaw a .488 win percentage, a significant improvement compared to the .362 mark from 2006-07 to 2020
McNair’s departure comes just three weeks after the exit of assistant GM Wes Wilcox, who left to become the general manager of the University of Utah men’s basketball program.
A New Chapter for Sacramento
With both McNair and Wilcox gone, the Kings face a significant leadership transition. The hiring of Perry signals a commitment to stability and continued growth following one of the franchise’s most successful periods in recent memory.
Perry’s challenge will be to build on the foundation laid by McNair while navigating an increasingly competitive Western Conference. With a talented young core in place, including De’Aaron Fox, Domantas Sabonis, and Keegan Murray, expectations will be high.
