Defeat to West Ham Leaves United Facing Historic Low
Ruben Amorim didn’t hold back after Manchester United’s latest Premier League embarrassment — a 2-0 loss at home to West Ham. The result marked United’s 17th league defeat of the season and left the club in 16th place, their worst position in the top flight since the 1973-74 relegation season.
“How is a manager of Manchester United supposed to feel in this position? Embarrassed and it’s hard to accept,” Amorim told reporters.
The frustration was clear throughout the manager’s post-match comments, as he questioned the attitude of his squad and even his own future at the club.
Amorim Questions Mentality and Urgency at United
While many expected Amorim to point fingers at specific players, the 40-year-old shifted focus to the club’s broader issues.
“For me, the biggest concern is that feeling that it’s OK. That we cannot change our position so it’s OK. That is the biggest problem in our club in this moment,” Amorim said.
“I will not talk about culture, but it’s a feeling — and it’s the most dangerous feeling we have in a big club. I have that feeling, that lack of urgency in everything we do.”
Europa League Final Looms, but Amorim Warns of Deeper Problems
Despite reaching the Europa League final, where they’ll face Tottenham on May 21, Amorim downplayed its importance in light of United’s deeper structural concerns.
“We are showing in the end of the season that playing in the Premier League and Champions League for us is the moon,” he said. “We need to change something that is deeper than this.”
United have won just six league matches since Amorim took over in November. With one final Premier League fixture against Chelsea remaining, the club is at risk of recording one of its lowest point totals in the Premier League era.
Amorim Hints at Uncertain Future Beyond This Season
With his contract running through 2027, Amorim’s job security is theoretically stable — but even he acknowledged that changes might be required if the club can’t reset its mentality.
“If the feeling is still here, we should give space to different persons,” he said. “We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this.”
Manchester United may yet lift silverware in Bilbao, but Amorim made it clear: a Europa League trophy won’t mask the deep-rooted dysfunction at Old Trafford.
