Charlton Boss Nathan Jones Calls Wrexham a “Circus” Ahead of League One Promotion Clash

The tension ahead of Saturday’s decisive League One clash has boiled over, with Charlton Athletic manager Nathan Jones branding Wrexham a “circus” as both teams battle for promotion to the Championship.

Wrexham, owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, are on the brink of a historic third straight promotion. They sit two points ahead of Wycombe Wanderers and four points clear of Charlton with just two games remaining.

Charlton’s path is tougher. They must beat Wrexham at the Stok Racecourse and hope for help elsewhere to keep their automatic promotion hopes alive.

After Charlton’s 4-0 demolition of Wycombe on Monday, Jones did not shy away from the pressure, saying, “It’s a bumper game. We have to go to the circus and see what we can get.”

What’s at Stake

Wrexham can secure promotion this weekend if they beat Charlton and Wycombe drop points against Leyton Orient.
Charlton must win to have any chance of staying in the hunt, with results on the final day also needing to go their way.

Both clubs enter the clash in top form. Wrexham are unbeaten in their last eight matches, while Charlton have won five of their last six.

Stockport County remain an outside threat but sit one point behind Charlton, needing a perfect finish to leapfrog into contention.

If Wrexham win their final two games against Charlton and Lincoln City, Championship football for 2025-26 will be guaranteed.

Teams finishing third to sixth will contest the playoffs, joining champions Birmingham City and the eventual runner-up in promotion.
