Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim revealed he found inspiration in the club’s historic 1999 Champions League triumph as his side produced a breathtaking comeback to defeat Lyon and advance to the Europa League semifinals.
Trailing 4-2 deep into extra time — despite playing with a one-man advantage following Corentin Tolisso’s red card — United staged a stunning rally, scoring three goals in seven minutes to secure a 5-4 victory on the night and a 7-6 aggregate win.
Amorim Channels United’s Legendary Spirit
Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Amorim said he had recently revisited Manchester United’s iconic 1999 Champions League final victory over Bayern Munich for motivation.
“I was watching the 1999 documentary to have some inspiration for these moments. It was a great night. The team were tired, 4-2 down with one more player, and we thought it was over, but here it’s never over. Everything is possible, you feel the environment.”
That same relentless spirit resurfaced at Old Trafford on Thursday. A Bruno Fernandes penalty started the comeback, followed by an equalizer from substitute Kobbie Mainoo. Harry Maguire completed the extraordinary turnaround with a dramatic header deep into stoppage time of extra time.
“The sound of the stadium was the best ever,” Amorim added. “Some people collect shirts or scarves, but I want to keep that sound — it’s the best sound in the world. I feel for the people who had to leave at 4-2 because of the traffic; they will be gutted.”
A Season of Struggles, A Night of Hope
Amorim acknowledged Manchester United’s underwhelming campaign but expressed optimism that this emotional comeback could serve as a catalyst for a strong finish.
“We know we are underperforming and deserve all the criticism, but we have time to make something special of this season,” he said.
United’s progression to the Europa League semifinals provides a much-needed lift, with the club now aiming to salvage silverware and momentum ahead of a critical summer of change.
