Celtics promote G League MVP JD Davison for playoffs

Boston converted JD Davison’s two-way deal into a standard NBA contract, making the G League MVP eligible for the playoffs.

Boston promoted G League MVP JD Davison to a standard NBA contract, making the guard eligible for the 2025 playoffs.

The Celtics announced the move on 13 April, using their open 15th roster spot without releasing another player. The team did not disclose the length or value of the contract.

Boston makes Davison available for postseason

Davison had spent the season on a two-way deal, which allowed him to play for Boston and its G League affiliate but made him ineligible for the NBA playoffs.

Converting the contract gave the defending champions another backcourt option as they prepared to enter the postseason as the Eastern Conference’s No. 2 seed with a 60-21 record.

Davison earns promotion with an MVP season

The 22-year-old won G League MVP on 2 April after averaging 25.1 points, 7.4 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 30 regular-season games for the Maine Celtics.

Davison ranked fourth in the league in scoring and seventh in assists. He was the only player to place among the top seven in both categories.

Maine went 21-13, and Davison became the franchise’s second MVP. Tim Frazier won the award in 2014-15, when the competition was still known as the NBA D-League.

Three years of development lead to NBA deal

Boston selected Davison with the 53rd pick in the 2022 NBA draft after one season at Alabama. He spent his first three professional seasons on two-way contracts while developing in Maine.

Davison had appeared in 35 NBA games for the Celtics, including 15 during the 2024-25 regular season. He also represented the G League at the Rising Stars event during All-Star Weekend in February.

Drew Peterson and Miles Norris remained Boston’s other two-way players after Davison moved into the full NBA roster.
