- Starting with team news, the manager says the forward who has been out could be in the team, because he started training with the squad this week and is in shape.
- On the two longer injuries, the manager says he hopes both will be back after the international break. They are long injuries, he says, so it is a matter of more or fewer days and they will have to see.
- The news landed just before the press conference, the manager says, and he is happy for the club and for the player. He calls it a long contract for the captain, says the goalkeeper showed his importance in his first game, and wants him back quickly for the dressing room too.
- Put to him that some at the club were unhappy with how a selection was handled, the manager says it is a story and it is unofficial. He says he spoke to the chairman about it a few days ago, that he always explains his decisions, and that there is no problem.
- It is historical because it is the club's first game in this competition, the manager says, and that is why they are happy to play it. It would be more historical still, he says, if they win it.
- Asked about the supporters' group absent from these nights, the manager says he felt them in the Ipswich game at the moment the team needed them and scored. They love the club, he says, and if the team plays to the club's values they will be there and the problem will be behind them.
I'd never really thought about a transfer this summer. I stay very far away from it. My agent doesn't really tell me anything. I don't want to know anything.
- Wharton says the England manager spoke to him before the summer squad was named and told him he was close, but took the decision not to take him. That is football and that is his decision, he says, with a lot of top midfielders to choose from. He expects the next squad on Friday.
If we didn't believe we could win it, then there's no point us playing tomorrow. There's no point playing in any of the games.
- They have struggled defensively since the start of the season, the manager says. They close the middle better now and push teams to the side, so the next job is to stop the crosses and defend the box, where he says five goals have gone in already in the league.
Crystal Palace begin their first-ever UEFA Europa League campaign against Lech Poznań at Selhurst Park, with Pierre Sage describing the occasion as historic for the club. Palace enter the league phase looking to build on last season’s European experience and make another strong run in continental competition.
Sage says the night will only become truly historic if Crystal Palace can win, while Adam Wharton believes the squad should embrace the challenge and has no reason to put limits on how far Palace can go in the Europa League.
The Palace manager also discussed how his side have prepared for Lech Poznań, having studied their recent matches and their route through European qualifying. The focus, however, remains on improving Palace’s own performances and implementing Sage’s approach both in and out of possession.
The press conference also included updates on Ismaïla Sarr, Dean Henderson and Jean-Philippe Mateta ahead of Crystal Palace’s Europa League opener.
