Peterborough beat Birmingham City 2-0 at Wembley to become the first club to win the EFL Trophy in consecutive seasons.
Harley Mills struck a spectacular free-kick and captain Hector Kyprianou added the second before half-time on 13 April 2025.
Mills lights up Wembley with long-range free-kick
Kwame Poku won a free-kick about 30 yards from goal in the 15th minute. Mills stepped forward and drove his left-footed shot off the underside of the crossbar.
The 19-year-old had started the season on loan in National League South. At Wembley, he also blocked a Kieran Dowell shot as Birmingham searched for a response.
Kyprianou doubles Peterborough’s lead
Mills delivered again just before the break, crossing for Ricky-Jade Jones to flick the ball into Kyprianou’s path. The captain finished from 20 yards.
Jay Stansfield forced a save from Jed Steer after half-time and later had a goal disallowed. Steer also denied Dowell and substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz.
Birmingham appealed twice for penalties involving Ethan Laird, but neither was given.
Ferguson makes history as Birmingham miss the double
“We’ve made a bit of history,” Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson told Sky Sports. It was his third win in the competition and fourth trophy with the club.
Birmingham had secured promotion and the League One title during the previous week. Peterborough denied them a trophy double with two outstanding first-half finishes and a disciplined defensive display.
