Mascherano rues errors as Inter Miami draw 3-3 at San Jose

Inter Miami led twice through Tadeo Allende, but San Jose punished defensive mistakes and held Javier Mascherano’s side to a draw.

Javier Mascherano blamed avoidable mistakes after Inter Miami surrendered two leads in a 3-3 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes.

Miami scored after 35 seconds and Tadeo Allende struck twice, but defensive lapses allowed San Jose back into the match each time.

Two goals arrive in three minutes

Maximiliano Falcon headed Miami ahead from a corner before the first minute had passed.

San Jose responded almost immediately. Cristian Arango pounced on a loose ball and equalised in the third minute, setting the tone for an open contest.

Beau Leroux put the Earthquakes ahead in the 37th minute, but Miami answered through Allende seven minutes later.

Allende restores Miami’s lead

Allende scored again seven minutes into the second half, racing onto a pass and finishing to make it 3-2.

Miami could not protect the advantage. Ian Harkes had already exposed space around their penalty area before the break, and San Jose continued to attack with speed.

The hosts found their third goal and held on despite late pressure from Lionel Messi and his teammates.

Mascherano demands more control

Mascherano said his players had created enough to win but repeatedly gave San Jose a route back into the game.

Messi was booked after protesting a decision near the end. San Jose coach Bruce Arena stepped between him and the referee as the discussion continued.

The draw earned Miami a point on the road, but the way they lost control left Mascherano focused on the errors rather than the three goals.
