Matheus Nunes scored his first Premier League goal for Manchester City in the 94th minute to seal a 2-1 win over Aston Villa.
The midfielder, playing at right-back, met Jérémy Doku’s low cross at the far post to move City into third place.
Bernardo Silva gives City an early lead
Marcus Rashford almost stunned City after 18 seconds, beating Ruben Dias before striking the far post.
The hosts responded in the seventh minute. Omar Marmoush drove into the box and cut the ball back for Bernardo Silva, whose powerful shot went through Emiliano Martínez.
Rashford levels from the penalty spot
Dias caught Jacob Ramsey inside the area after 18 minutes. Referee Craig Pawson initially allowed play to continue but awarded a penalty after reviewing the challenge.
Pep Guardiola was booked for protesting before Rashford sent Stefan Ortega the wrong way.
James McAtee came close with a 25-yard lob after the break, while Marmoush had a goal ruled out for offside.
Doku creates the winner in stoppage time
With the match entering the fourth of five added minutes, Doku beat his defender on the left and drove a low ball across goal.
Nunes arrived at the far post and squeezed his finish past Martínez from a tight angle, sparking wild celebrations on the City touchline.
Villa manager Unai Emery felt his side had been close to earning a point. “We competed well and close to drawing,” he told Sky Sports.
City take control of Champions League race
The victory moved City one point above Nottingham Forest and two ahead of Newcastle with four matches left in the Premier League.
Guardiola enjoyed the late winner but did not soften his verdict on City’s campaign. “The season has been bad,” he said. “It happened and sometimes you have bad seasons.”
