Vivianne Miedema was expected to miss the rest of Manchester City’s season after suffering a hamstring injury on international duty.
The forward scored after coming off the bench in the Netherlands’ 3-1 Nations League win over Austria on 8 April 2025, but she was forced off about 15 minutes later.
Hamstring injury ends Miedema’s strong run
Miedema had just been named Manchester City’s player of the month for March after producing six goals and assists in eight appearances.
Interim head coach Nick Cushing confirmed the setback before City’s Women’s FA Cup semi-final against Manchester United.
“She’s positive but it’s not looking good in the sense of being able to imminently impact any of our games,” Cushing said in comments published by Manchester City.
“She’s concentrating on rehab now, and we’ll give her all the support she needs to be back out there as quick as possible.”
City lose another key attacker
Khadija Shaw, City’s leading scorer with 15 goals that season, was also ruled out of the semi-final. She had not played since the League Cup final defeat by Chelsea.
Cushing said Alex Greenwood, Lauren Hemp, Rebecca Knaak and Aoba Fujino were progressing, but none would be rushed back.
City had drawn up a five-week plan to win the FA Cup and finish in the Champions League places. Cushing hoped Hemp and Greenwood would return before the season ended.
Another injury setback for Miedema
Miedema joined City from Arsenal in the summer of 2024, but her first season had already been interrupted by surgery on her left knee.
The Women’s Super League’s all-time leading scorer had previously missed 11 months with an anterior cruciate ligament injury and sat out the 2023 World Cup.
She recorded nine goals and two assists in 14 appearances for City in all competitions before the hamstring injury, according to Sky Sports.
