Virgil van Dijk expected a major summer of transfers at Liverpool as the club moved closer to the Premier League title.
The captain spoke after heading an 89th-minute winner against West Ham, a result that left Liverpool six points from becoming champions.
Van Dijk expects players to come and go
“Whatever happens in terms of players going out, players coming in, I think it should be a big summer,” Van Dijk said. “I think they’re planning to make it a big summer.”
He urged supporters to trust the club’s recruitment team and said the squad had to keep improving in a Premier League where any side could take points from another.
Van Dijk also believed a full pre-season under Arne Slot would help. The previous summer’s schedule had given the team little time to learn the new coach’s methods.
Captain stays quiet on contract talks
Van Dijk’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but he refused to confirm whether a new agreement was close.
“Everyone knows how much I love this club,” he told Sky Sports. “Let’s see what next week will look like.”
The West Ham match was his 100th as Liverpool captain and came during the week of the Hillsborough anniversary, which he said carried greater importance than his contract.
Salah wants Van Dijk to stay
Mohamed Salah had signed his own two-year extension two days earlier and hoped Van Dijk would follow.
“He can do whatever he wants, but I would love to play with him next season,” Salah said.
Salah assisted Luis Díaz’s opener against West Ham before Van Dijk settled the match with a late header.
