USWNT’s Midge Purce fit to return after year out

GOTHAM’S BACKLINE BOOST — AND A BIGGER STATEMENT.

After 13 long, grueling months on the sidelines, Midge Purce is finally ready to step back onto the pitch.

The Gotham FC and USWNT standout winger is officially available for selection this Sunday when Gotham hosts the North Carolina Courage — marking the end of a year-long recovery from a torn ACL suffered last March against Portland.

“Very happy that after 13 months, Midge is going to be available,” Gotham coach Juan Carlos Amorós said Friday. “It’s a credit to her, to the staff, and to her teammates. She’s a special person and a very special player.”

A Championship MVP Returns

Let’s not forget who’s coming back.

Purce, 29, was the MVP of the 2023 NWSL Championship, assisting both goals in Gotham’s 2-1 win over OL Reign to lift the club’s first-ever league title. A dynamic force on the wing, she’s also been deployed as a fullback for the USWNT, notching 30 caps and 4 goals in the Stars and Stripes.

“It’s the first game in a very long time,” Amorós added. “She probably won’t play a ton of minutes, but just having her available — it’s exciting news.”

More Than Just a Return

Purce missed the 2024 season and Team USA’s Olympic run, watching from the sidelines as her teammates took home gold. But throughout rehab, she stayed close to the club — and according to her coach, brought energy to every training session, every day.

Now, the wait is over.

“She’s not just here for small talk,” Gotham FC posted.
🔥 Midge is back. 🔥

The NWSL knows exactly what that means.
