Portland gave Chauncey Billups a multiyear contract extension after the Trail Blazers improved by 14 wins during the 2024-25 season.
General manager Joe Cronin announced the deal on 13 April, six days after receiving his own extension. The team did not disclose the terms.
Portland backs Billups despite missing play-in
The Trail Blazers entered their season finale at 35-46 and had already been eliminated from play-in contention. Even so, their progress from a 21-win season persuaded the organization to keep Billups beyond the final guaranteed year of his contract.
“We are building this team the right way with a defensive-minded, hard-nosed, competitive culture,” Billups said in the team’s announcement.
Cronin praised Billups as a leader and communicator who had established a clearer identity for a young roster.
Improved defense drives the decision
Portland pointed to its defensive progress as the strongest evidence of growth. The team said the Trail Blazers ranked third in defensive rating across the previous 40 games and fifth in fourth-quarter defensive rating.
The club also said Billups had improved Portland’s defensive rating in every season since 2022-23.
Team chair Jody Allen credited his ability to create a collaborative culture and a growth mindset for the developing group.
Billups continues second career in Portland
Billups was hired in 2021 and held a 116-211 record before the 2024-25 finale. His tenure began during a rebuild, and the extension signaled that Portland viewed the season’s improvement as more important than the overall record.
The 48-year-old played 17 NBA seasons, made five All-Star teams and won Finals MVP with the Detroit Pistons in 2004. He entered the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in October 2024.
