Marc Cucurella headed the only goal as Chelsea beat Manchester United 1-0 and moved into fourth place on 16 May 2025.
Reece James supplied the cross for the 71st-minute winner, leaving Chelsea one victory from securing Champions League qualification.
Chelsea create chances without a senior striker
Enzo Maresca started 19-year-old Tyrique George through the middle because Nicolas Jackson was suspended and Marc Guiu was unavailable.
Noni Madueke lifted an early chance over the bar, while James struck the post. George battled against Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw and gave Chelsea a threat in behind.
James and Cucurella combine for the winner
James turned away from his marker and crossed towards the far post. Cucurella arrived behind the defence and headed the ball back across Andre Onana.
“The assist from the right full-back and the goal from the left full-back, it’s the way I like to play,” Maresca said.
George later won a penalty when Onana challenged him, but referee Chris Kavanagh overturned the decision after reviewing the incident.
United’s league collapse continues
United had a Maguire goal ruled out for offside and Amad forced a save after Chelsea took the lead.
The defeat was United’s 18th of the league season, their worst total since being relegated in 1974. Their winless run reached eight matches.
For Chelsea, the result restored control of their Champions League race before the final trip to Nottingham Forest.
