Leicester relegated after Alexander-Arnold gives Liverpool 1-0 win

Trent Alexander-Arnold returned from injury to score the only goal as Liverpool relegated Leicester and moved closer to the title.

Leicester were relegated from the Premier League after Trent Alexander-Arnold came off the bench to give Liverpool a 1-0 victory.

The defender scored in the 76th minute on his return from an ankle injury, sending Leicester down with five matches remaining.

Alexander-Arnold breaks the deadlock

Liverpool struck the woodwork twice during a chaotic corner. Mohamed Salah headed against the post before Diogo Jota hit the bar.

The loose ball reached Alexander-Arnold, who drove a left-footed shot past Mads Hermansen five minutes after entering the match.

It was his 23rd Liverpool goal and, by his own recollection, the first he had scored with his left foot.

Leicester fall without a home goal

Leicester became the first English top-flight club to go nine consecutive home league matches without scoring.

They still threatened. Wilfred Ndidi hit the post, while Conor Coady headed into an empty net before the goal was disallowed for Patson Daka’s foul on Alisson.

It was Leicester’s fifth Premier League relegation and followed Southampton into the Championship.

Liverpool move within one win of title

The result left Liverpool 13 points clear of Arsenal and one victory from a record-equalling 20th English league championship.

Arne Slot refused to let questions about Alexander-Arnold’s expiring contract overshadow the winning goal.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, who won two of 20 league games after replacing Steve Cooper, said he wanted clarity from Leicester as the club began planning its return to the Championship.
