Gold Cup offers Pochettino a World Cup test

The tournament was the United States’ final official competition before co-hosting the 2026 World Cup with Canada and Mexico.

“This is an important opportunity for our team, not only to compete for our confederation championship but also to continue to build our understanding of the group,” Mauricio Pochettino said in comments published by U.S. Soccer.

The draw followed a disappointing Nations League Finals campaign. The USMNT lost 1-0 to Panama in the semi-final and 2-1 to Canada in the third-place match.

The United States had won all five of their Gold Cup meetings with Trinidad and Tobago. Their group-stage record against Haiti stood at three wins and one draw.

Saudi Arabia entered as the tournament’s invited guest nation. The teams had met seven times before.
